WhatsApp is testing call features for its web version. WABetaInfo found call buttons on the web client. These buttons include a camera and phone icon together. Earlier, users had to use mobile or desktop apps. Web client users could only send and receive messages.

Now, WhatsApp Web will also allow making calls easily. A new dropdown menu helps users start voice or video calls. This change started earlier for beta users in group chats. Now, WhatsApp is working on making it available for everyone.

Once launched, WhatsApp Web will work like Microsoft Teams. You can chat and call directly using Chrome, Edge, or Safari. There will be no need to download any special application.

Progress After Desktop App Support

The desktop app for Windows and Mac got call support earlier. It happened in 2021, helping users make calls easily. After four years, the web version is finally getting this feature. Meta’s Messenger app already had web calling support.

Because of the shared technology, WhatsApp Web is catching up. Recently, WhatsApp Web also got a new design update. It now looks very similar to the Android app version. WABetaInfo found the call options hidden in the beta update.

This new feature will allow calling groups and individuals too. It will work the same way as the desktop app. When starting a call, users must allow mic and webcam access. The browser will remember permissions unless cookies get deleted. Users can also grant permissions for one session only.

No Need for Separate App Installations

The new update will save a lot of time. Users do not need a separate app for calls. They can simply use WhatsApp Web on any device. It will be easy for people using new desktops. Just log in and start calling without extra downloads.

There is no confirmed launch date for this feature yet. However, beta testing suggests it will come very soon. WhatsApp also recently launched a new chat privacy feature. It stops others from exporting your personal chats.
